This really did happen, more or less without embellishments. We had just gotten back from having a picnic outside with the neighbors. We live in "married" grad student housing and lots of people have kids, our awesome neighbors no exception. Since our kids are about the same age, we all thought it would be swell to hang out. The picnic was great, complete with fresh-baked scones and ants. So we're back in front of our door and Vera notices that our tomato plants are looking a little barren.
We're sort of proud of our tomato plants. They're growing in three pots of soil that we composted over the past year, and they're the best we've ever grown. So Vera was a little ticked off that a bug was having its way with our plants. The culprit was a H-U-G-E and happy-looking caterpillar. Being biologists, we (okay, Vera) plucked it off and ooh-n'-ah'ed at it for a while.
"What is it?"
"I dunno, I'm not that kind of biologist."
Our chemist neighbor informed us that it was a sphinx moth caterpillar. Us in unison: "Oh. Cool!"
But then Vera wanted the little one to see and leaned in with the poor thing in her out-stretched hand...
I think our neighbors are going to report us to animal cruelty.
